1300 885 886 Independent Living Centres Advisory Service

An electrically operated, alternating air mattress replacement system designed for pressure injury prevention and treatment in high risk users with pressure ulcers up to grade three. It consists of a pressure reducing layer of air cells operating on a 1:4 active cell cycle. Mattress and cover are machine washable. Available in single and double bed sizes.

General Details

Safety and Usage Advice

SAFETY FEATURES: visual and audible operation status, such as a low air pressure warning alarm, and fault indicators on the pump.

CPR RELEASE: situated at the side of the overlay for rapid deflation. Note that the yellow CPR tag is an indicator, not the CPR release (which is a dial situated on the head end of the right side of the mattress).

IN THE EVENT OF POWER FAILURE:
* unplanned power failure - disconnect the hose from the pump to put mattress into Transport Mode. This will lock the valve. The mattress will remain inflated for approximately 12-15 hours (depending on weight).
* planned power failure - inflate to maximum using the Max. Inflation function - this will extend time of inflation without power up to 24 hours (depending on weight).

Cleaning Requirements

COVER: machine wash (temperature not to exceed 50 degrees) and the line dry (in the shade) or tumble dry on cool (71degC maximum).

MATTRESS: The cells can be separated from the base for decontamination. Machine wash mattress per manufacturer instructions.

AVOID: use of bleach, chlorine releasing agents over 1000ppm, or solvents or alcohol-based cleaners as these will destroy the mattress material

Options

Additional feature includes the ability to attach a Talley B.A.S.E. Sequential cushion. The pump will then manage both the mattress and the cushion. This allows the occupant to be transferred between the cushion and the mattress without the need to deflate and swap hoses.

A double bed mattress is also available, providing a supportive foam section for use by occupants partner.

Maintenance

Check the mattress daily for punctures or air loss.

In the event of failure of air cells to inflate or "low pressure fault" on display, check:
* power source is on / functional
* mattress is connected to pump and not in Transport Mode (green dot visible)
* CPR valve is closed
* air cells are all connected and nil punctures.

Contact service centre / supplier for issues arising with pump or damage to air cells. Individual air cells can be removed for repair or replacement.

Method of Use

Sits directly on the existing bed base. The air pressure is automatically adjusted in response to weight, movement and positioning. Default setting is at "active medium", however this can be altered to soft or firm, depending on comfort preference and support.

Installation

This is a mattress replacement system - the mattress sits directly on the existing bed base.

Attach air supply hose to pump / power unit by aligning the black line on the air supply hose connector with the black line on the power unit connector and pushing together. Rotate connector clockwise until the green indicator is visible through the indicator hole on the power unit connection.

Connect power lead into pump on left side and plug into mains power. Switch the pump on. The system will display STARTING, then INITIALISING while the mattress inflates. This will take 10-15 minutes - do not turn power off during this stage.

The air pressure is automatically adjusted in response to weight, movement and positioning. The default setting is at "active medium", however this can be altered to soft or firm, depending on comfort preference and support.

Extra product information

The system consists of a portable pump unit, a pressure reducing underlay of air cells from plastic (polyurethane). The plastic (polyurethane) under layer is independently encased in a waterproof vapour permeable cover.

STRUCTURE: the top layer consists of 16 individual air chambers grouped in four groups of four cells. These air cells sit on top of an under layer with the whole system being only 180mm deep. This low profile assists with transfer with the use of side rails.

Both the cell material and the cover are non allergenic, highly resistant to soaps and the detergents, and are fully washable for effective decontamination. Both the under layer and the air cells have separate covers.

Each of cells cyclically inflate and deflate one at a time in each group, continually supporting the body on at least 75% of the mattress surface while the pressure on 25% of the body is relieved. The cycle time is 15 minutes. The cells are designed to be narrower at their centre, and wider at the mattress edge. This ensures that the smaller, lighter occupants occupy the softer centre part as well as providing some resistance to the occupant rolling off the overlay. In addition the overlay can be profiled using adjustable straps.

COVER: The removable cover is two way stretch, vapour permeable (breathable; to minimise perspiration), waterproof and fire retardant. Cover has skirt and welded seams to prevent fluids entering.

PUMP / CONTROLS: A separate, portable alternating pressure pump features an on / off switch and a manually operated pressure control dial which sets the required level of air pressure according to the user's weight. The pumps operate by supplying air on demand only, when the mattress requires it, reducing power consumption and extending service life. The pump can be hung on the bed by adjustable hanging brackets or stood on the floor.

MAXIMUM INFLATE FEATURE: When activated, the mattress will inflate to its maximum static pressure. This is useful when the alternating pressure function is not suitable; eg. during transfers or nursing procedures. This function will automatically deactivate after 15 minutes.

THERAPY MODE: changes mattress from active to reactive function; ie. maintains the mattress at a constant low pressure. This is useful for people who have an unstable fracture or are sensitive to the movement that occurs as the cells alternate through their cycles.

TRANSPORT: The connection hose can be disconnected from the pump and locked to maintain air pressure for transport of the mattress.

Caution: Pressure Cushions & Mattresses

• All pressure reduction products must be monitored to prevent 'bottoming out'. This occurs when the user's weight bears down so hard on the product material that it is flattened and the bony parts are pressed against the surface below the cushion or mattress. Where bottoming out occurs even with correct use (e.g. correct inflation levels), a different product may need to be considered.

• Sometimes, due to the user deteriorating, the product may become unsuitable. Continuous monitoring is necessary and alternative products may be recommended.

• There are many things to consider when selecting pressure care products including nutrition, skin moisture, level of mobility, age shear, friction, location of pressure ulcer (if present) and hygiene. Any comments regarding level of pressure care is a suggestion made by suppliers as a guide to assist with selection, and this may differ from brand to brand. When selecting pressure care products it is strongly advised that a comprehensive assessment is undertaken by a health professional to encourage correct product selection and monitoring of product effectiveness.
