Factors to Consider

It may be helpful to refer to Australian Standards AS/NZS 4370: 1996 Restraint of children with disabilities in motor vehicles to assist in deciding the safest way to transport a child with a disability.
This vest may assist in positioning individuals who independently release seatbelts during travel in the car.
As this item does not meet Australian Standard AS 1754 2000, a medical certificate is required from a certified medical practitioner, with a review and expiry date, to explain why the item is required and the length of time it's required. This certificate must be stored with the item at all times. For further information, contact Vic Roads on 13 11 71.
The EZ ON Vest with tether strap and hook is designed to provide additional support for the user while sitting in a family vehicle. It is required to be used in conjunction with the existing vehicle seatbelt. Refer to the VicRoads 'Restraint Fitting Stations Get It Right' brochure to ensure that the child car restraint is installed correctly. If this item impedes the vehicle seatbelt in any way, a letter from a certified medical practitioner will be required to outline the need for this modification to the car seat restraint. For more information, contact Vic Roads on 13 11 71.
Alteration of a car restraint from its original form is considered a modification and is therefore no longer approved. In this instance a medical certificate explaining why the modification or alteration is required, must be stored with the item at all times.
The modified E-Z-On Vest may be appropriate to use to transport a child who has a very straight hip spica plaster cast in a lying position across the back seat. As this item will impede the vehicles seatbelt a certificate from a certified medical practitioner is required to outline the need for this modification to the car seat restraint. For more information, contact Vic Roads on 13 11 71.
The Modified E-Z-On Vest may be more difficult to secure, as the child must be in a lying position in order to thread the seat belt through the vest for secure attachment.
The E-Z-On Vest with Portable Seat Mount must be used with stationary van or bus seats.
The E-Z-On Vest must be adjusted snugly around the child.
Manufacturer's instructions must be followed.
Refer to following link for Guidelines on Restraining Children with Disabilities in Motor Vehicles.

===

This restraint should be provided only on the advice and recommendation of a medical practitioner and should be regularly monitored. It is not suitable for use in a car or bus
There is a risk of chest compression or suffocation, if the user's body weight is suspended off the chair seat. Use extreme caution with chair cushions. If a cushion dislodges, straps may loosen and allow the user to slide off the seat
The user should be monitored to ensure that they cannot slide down, or fall off the chair seat and become suspended
Straps must ALWAYS be snug, but not interfere with breathing or circulation. After application, slide an open hand (flat) between the device and user to ensure proper fit. Make sure that the straps are secured at a juncture of the frame, out of the user's reach, and cannot slide in any direction, as this would change the position of the device. If a user's body weight becomes suspended off the chair, chest compression and suffocation could result.

Contraindications (as stated by manufacturer)
DO NOT use on a patient who is or becomes highly aggressive, combative, agitated,or suicidal.
DO NOT use on patients with: ostomy, colostomy, or G-tubes; hernias, severe Cardio Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD); or with post-surgery tubes, incisions or monitoring lines. These could be disrupted by a restraint
STOP USE AT ONCE: if the patient has a tendency to slide forward or down in the device; or is able to self-release
NOTE: A restraint with a pelvic piece will reduce the risk of sliding, or of the patient pulling the device over his or her head
DO NOT use on a patient who is unwilling or unable to follow instructions, and is at risk of a fall or re-injury from self-release

Adverse Reactions (as stated by manufacturer)
Severe emotional, psychological, or physical problems may occur: if the applied device is uncomfortable; or if it severely limits movement. If symptoms of these problems ever appear for any reason, get help from a qualified medical authority and find a less restrictive, product or intervention
