A wheelchair cushion made up of 48 interconnected air filled cells, each covered with a layer of silicon based Trugel and a foam base. The cushion is inflated via twin valves. It is suitable for users at high risk of pressure ulcer development and is available in seven sizes. The cushion comes with a removable, stretch, waterproof cover and pump.

General Details

Method of Use

1) Inflate the Gelcell G2 cushion with the pump provided until it feels hard to the touch.
2) Ensure the cushion is positioned with the smaller contoured cells to the rear of the chair
3) Squeeze the valves to release air and continue to do so until no further air flows out, i.e. until the internal air pressure has returned to atmospheric pressure.
4) Place yourself or the user on top of the cushion, in an upright position, ensuring the back is straight and maintaining as near as possible a 90 degree angle at hips and knees.
5) Pinch the valves again and release air for approximately two seconds or until you feel that you or the user have reached the most suitable position. As air is released the cushion will conform to the shape of the user.
6) Place your hand under the area of most bony prominence. The distance between the user's bony prominence and the bottom of the cushion should be no less than 15mm.
7) Adjust air pressures to correct any pelvic obliquity taking care that neither side allows a bony prominence to be less than 15mm from the base of the cushion.
8) The Gelcell is now properly adjusted.
9) Check the level of inflation on a regular basis.

Caution

All cushions must be monitored to prevent 'bottoming out'. This occurs when the user's weight bears down so hard on the product material that it is flattened and the bony parts are pressed against the surface below the cushion. Where bottoming out occurs even with correct use (eg correct choice and depth of foam, correct inflation level) , a different product may need to be considered.

The cushion can be punctured. Ensure that the item is not accidentally placed upside down or back to front. Ensure the item is correctly inflated at all times.

Caution: Pressure Cushions & Mattresses

• All pressure reduction products must be monitored to prevent 'bottoming out'. This occurs when the user's weight bears down so hard on the product material that it is flattened and the bony parts are pressed against the surface below the cushion or mattress. Where bottoming out occurs even with correct use (e.g. correct inflation levels), a different product may need to be considered.

• Sometimes, due to the user deteriorating, the product may become unsuitable. Continuous monitoring is necessary and alternative products may be recommended.

• There are many things to consider when selecting pressure care products including nutrition, skin moisture, level of mobility, age shear, friction, location of pressure ulcer (if present) and hygiene. Any comments regarding level of pressure care is a suggestion made by suppliers as a guide to assist with selection, and this may differ from brand to brand. When selecting pressure care products it is strongly advised that a comprehensive assessment is undertaken by a health professional to encourage correct product selection and monitoring of product effectiveness.

Extra product information

When pressure is applied to the cushion, air circulates to each of the air cells, distributing weight and reducing high pressure concentrations around the bony prominences. The cells at the rear of the cushion are smaller and contoured.

The 48 cells are split into two separate air cambers which are operated by separate valves. The pressure within each half can be adjusted to alter pelvic position.

The cushion has three layers of polyurethane film with a total thickness of 1mm for durability. The film can be wiped clean.

The cushion cover has a topside made of Weft knitted polyester fabric with a polyurethane transfer coating on inner side. The coating protects against fungiand bacteria. The underside cover is made of Weft knitted nylon coated with flame retardantPU, which has been treated with a biocide. The coating protects against fungi and bacteria. The cover is waterproof, has a anti-slip surface and can be wiped clean. It has a hook and loop tape fastening.

The cover is labelled to promote correct positioning and use of the cushion.

The cells at the rear of the cushion are smaller and contoured to provide extra conformity to the body and encourage good posture.

The foam base is 38mm in height for all models.
