The range of Grooved Platform Communicators have either sound and light output or speech and light output. Each model has 3 keys that are large and are activated by pressing. Messages can be represented by objects or pictures that are placed on the platform behind the key.

Voice Output
Only one model of the device has recordable speech messages.
Digitised (recorded human) voice used.
Voice volume can be varied, but the highest setting is not very loud
Voice quality is influenced by relative position of the device to the person doing the recording.
Accessing Options
Direct access, by pressing each of the 3 large keys
Memory
Each key plate holds up to 5 seconds of memory for a total of 15 seconds for all 3 plates
The device will retain recorded information in it's memory even though the batteries are disconnected.
Symbol Systems
Any combination of objects, photos, symbols or text can be used to represent recorded messages. Message representations should be placed on the platform or in the grooves behind the keys.
Batteries and Charging
The devices take four standard AA batteries which are recessed into the underside of the device
The device should be turned off when not in use to preserve battery life, as the voice quality is reduced when batteries are low on charge.
Standard accessories
Six shatter proof blank picture cards. These cards can have pictures or symbols attached, or can be directly written on with a white board marker.
Factors to Consider
Messages can be recorded easily for quick set up in busy classrooms and other environments.
Speech can be recorded in any language to suit people from a non English speaking background.
The size of these devices may limit there usefulness especially for users who are independently mobile. In addition the size of the devices may negatively influence the users ability to participate in activities. Support from others to remove and introduce the device as appropriate may be required.
