Factors to Consider
· When the sternum strap is used, care should be taken that a lap belt is used which will prevent the occupant sliding forward. If the occupant slides well forward, the strap may get caught on their throat and be a choking hazard.
The top of the shoulder harness should be level with the shoulders to give a suitable angle of pull. This may require a different backrest.
If used and positioned correctly, this product can help prevent a wheelchair occupant from leaning forward while seated. A solid backed backrest should be used with this product to give a firm support. Slung upholstery may have too much give and cause the back to be unsupported.
The pads are tapered at the neck region to try and prevent rubbing.
Padding can reduce pressure issues for some wheelchair occupants.
An option is available to give dynamic movement through the shoulders using elastic sections. This may be useful for those who need extra movement such as rocking or reaching forward.
It may be helpful to refer to Australian Standards AS/NZS 4370: 1996 Restraint of children with disabilities in motor vehicles to assist in deciding the safest way to transport a child with a disability.
This item is designed to provide additional support for the user while sitting in a vehicle. It is required to be used in conjunction with the existing vehicle seatbelt. If this item impedes the vehicle seatbelt in any way, a letter from a doctor may be required to outline the need for this modification to the car seat restraint. For more information, contact Vic Roads on 13 11 71.
