· Careful consideration needs to be taken when choosing a bed rail or stick. They may increase the risk of injury to the occupant in several ways. Entrapment of limbs or body parts may occur within the rails, or between the rails and the bed. This may occur to those having a seizure, or rolling over in bed, or if unstable while transferring out of bed.
· Bed rails can cause some occupants to become anxious while in bed. They may try to climb over the rails, particularly if the occupant has a condition such as dementia.

Bed rails are used to try and protect the bed occupant from injury. Careful consideration needs to be taken when choosing a bed rail or stick. They may increase the risk of injury to the occupant in several ways. Entrapment of limbs or body parts may occur within the rails, or between the rails and the bed. This may occur to those having a seizure, or rolling over in bed, or if unstable while transferring out of bed.
Bed rails can cause some occupants to become anxious while in bed. They may try to climb over the rails, particularly if the occupant has a condition such as dementia.
These mattresses can be made to measure so the mattress fits the mattress base. This may assist reduce the possibility of entrapment using bed rails.
Polyurethane cover provides a water resistant cover that may benefit some occupants at risk of pressure ulcers.
· Raised sides can help prevent some occupants from rolling out of bed. This can also negatively affect ease of transfers, and bed mobility.
A firm edge surrounding the mattress may assist transfers, or provide a firmer base for attendants assisting an occupant on the mattress.
The foam barrier may help prevent damage to air cells on an air mattress overlay when fold down or dropside bed rails are moved up and down.
The base section of the surrounds could have the thickness, grade of foam and covering material provide extra protection to the mattress overlay from bottoming out, particularly when the occupant is sitting up.
The thickness of the base section may allow the height of the mattress overlay to be altered to that required by the occupant for transfers.
