The Balloon Switch is a switch with adjustable sensitivity, consisting of a balloon connected to a control unit. Changes in air pressure are detected when a user squeezes the balloon causing switch activation. The degree of sensitivity or responsiveness can be altered by adjusting a knob on the switch unit into which the balloon tube is inserted. The control unit allows the user to squeeze consecutively without releasing the balloon. The control unit is powered with a 9Volt battery.
General Details
Extra product information
The Balloon Switch is a very sensitive squeeze switch. Minute changes in air pressure are generated when a switch user squeezes the balloon. An electronic sensing
system feeds measurements to a specially programmed computer circuit which constantly compensates for background pressure and ‘non-switch’ signals such as the user’s pulse.
The Balloon switch will operate for over a
week on a 9 volt battery. When connected to a power supply it automatically changes to a more responsive program which can be used for switch scanning.
Any squeeze bulb or similar device can be
connected to the Balloon switch. The supplier issues the product with a supply of conventional party balloons, with a light density foam insert. The foam insert gives the balloon a self inflating function and also provides some back pressure for the user to press against.
Factors to Consider
There are two switching function:
1) a squeeze to activate initiating a pulse activation - this resets so that release is not required.
2) hold - in momentary mode where the switching will continue as long as the pressure is sustained.
This device can also be used as a puff switch by removing the balloon and blowing across the end of the green air tube.
Safety and Usage Advice
Caution is advised when considering the switch application. If used for wheelchair driving, for example, consider that situations where the wheelchair may collide, the switch user is more likely to squeeze on the switch, not release. Supervision will be required at all times and a remote kill switch installed on the wheelchair.
