Powered Scooters - safety advice for use

Test you can drive the power scooter safely and with ease before buying it. Check local power scooter road rules and follow them. Only drive in areas scooter is designed for.
This item should be trialled in the user's own environment to ensure maximum safety and independence. Environmental considerations include e.g.: kerbs, footpaths, tram and railway crossings, street crossings, etc.

Extra product information

This scooter has an epoxy coated steel frame, moulded plastic cowlings and low profile carpet matting on the foot platform. It has two reversing mirrors and a front basket as standard.

The scooter does not dismantle however the backrest can be folded flat onto the seat to facilitate storage and transportation of the scooter.

Seat has two release levers. The first is located underneath the right hand side of the seat base and allows the seat to swivel through 180 degrees, locking at 0, 45 and 90 degrees. The second lever is located under the front right hand side of the seat base and allows the seat to slide forwards and backwards. The armrests are lift up and height adjustable. The padded headrest is height adjustable. A buckle style seat belt is standard with the scooter. The padded backrest has lateral contouring and is angle adjustable via a lever located on the rear right hand side of the seat.

Steering Column can be tilt adjusted via a lever located underneath the control panel and is controlled via wrap-around style rubber covered handles. A cup/drink bottle holder is located mid-way up the steering column.

Front Wheels are 280mm (11") diameter, pneumatic tyres.

Rear Wheels are 280mm (11") diameter, pneumatic tyres.

Rear Anti-Tip Wheels are 50mm (2") diameter, solid castor wheels.

Battery Charging is achieved by connecting the off-board battery charger to the scooter from the charger inlet located on the tiller and then plugging this in to a mains power point.

Batteries are two 12 volt, 40 Amp gel cell batteries. They are stored under the seat.

Footrest is a flat platform between the steering column and battery cover.

Controls feature a key for turning the scooter on and off, a proportional finger or thumb operated lever speed control. The control panel features soft touch LED buttons for left and right indicators, mode, set, headlight (including settings for parking lamp, standard headlight, and position light used during rainy or gloomy weather), warning indicator (for mechanical failure), hazard lights, horn, set button, high and low speed control.

LCD screen panel displays high and low speed selected setting (indicated as a tortoise and hare), battery charge, outdoor temperature (in degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit), clock, odometer, trip meter, speedometer, headlight setting (including power saving mode), position light, brake light, left and right direction indicators (which switch off automatically after 30 seconds), parking light, and malfunction messages (signalled with an "ERROR" warning symbol).

Brakes are electromagnetic. An additional emergency brake is optional.

Freewheel is engaged by flicking a lever located at the rear left hand corner of the base, above the left hand rear wheel.

Safety Features include:
Reversing Beeper - an auditory alarm will beep when the scooter is reversing.
Low Battery Warning - the scooter will flash an "ERROR" symbol on the LCD display screen when the battery charge is getting low.
Mechanical Malfunction Warning - if the scooter detects a mechanical fault it will flash an "ERROR" symbol on the LCD display screen with a numerical message code.

Public Transport Requirements

The space allowed on public transport for carrying mobility equipment is an area of 1300mm by 800mm.

Licensing and Insurance Requirements

You are legally required to advise your State licensing authority of any medical condition or disability that may impact on your driving. If not, you risk fines or legal action and your car insurance can be affected. You may need to provide medical reports or undergo driving tests. Modifications to your vehicle must be in line with the Australian safety and design rules. Fitting of wheelchair occupant restraints, child restraints and vehicle hoist ramps must meet relevant Australian Standards. Modifications should be done by suitably qualified vehicle modifiers. You will also need to inform your car insurer of any vehicle modifications. Your policy may become void if you do not do so.
